Note 3 to Chapter 4 of the author's Tennyson's Major Poems, which Yale University Press published in 1975. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
Much commentary on the poem, is concerned either with its topicality or with such isolated details as the prince's weird seizures. John Killham's Tennyson and 'The Prinzess," the only full-length study of the poem, demonstrates how fully it relates to topical subjects, notably the feminist controversy.
