In this poster advertising an early dramatisation of Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), Dr Jekyll's alter ego, Mr Hyde, slinks away from him very much like a departing shadow. The poster was printed in Chicago, and the fact that it dates from the 1880s shows how quickly as well as widely the work had become popular. [Jacqueline Banerjee]
