M. D. Allen is Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley, where he has taught since 1990. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on T. E. Lawrence's interest in the medieval world (published as The Medievalism of Lawrence of Arabia, U. Pennsylvania State Press, 1991), and maintains an interest in Anglo-Arabian travel literature. Allen's main current scholarly focus is the works of George Gissing, and he is writing a monograph entitled "Gissing and France," which examines principally Gissing's interest in French literature and culture and its influence on his novels. He is also editing the proceedings of the Fourth International Gissing Conference, held at the University of York, England, in 2011. Although not a professional Dickensian, Allen regularly teaches Dickens' novels. He aspires to publish on the greatest of all English novelists one of these days.
