Grahame Smith studied English Language and Literature, and received his MA with first class honours from the University of Aberdeen in 1960. In 1963 he received his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. He has taught at the University of Wales, University of California, and is currently Professor of English at the University of Stirling. His publications include books on Dickens, Money and Society; The Novel and Society: Defoe to George Eliot; The Achievement of Graham Greene; Hard Times.
