Harry Richard Stelling, who was born in Chicago April 1, 1927, served in the U. S. Navy, 1945-46. He received the B.A. degree in 1950, with majors in English and modern language and the M.A. from the University of Illinois in 1951, doing additional graduate work at the University of Iowa (1965-67). He taught at colleges in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois for total of 41 years, retiring as Associate Professor from Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois in 1992. His major field of interest is Victorian literature, but he has also taught courses in writing, journalism, film, and the political novel.
Professor Stelling married Mary Ann Nitchoff of Lyons, Illinois in 1950, and they have five children and six grand-children. His oldest grandson will graduate, May 2002, from Arizona State University with major in English.
He has published a volume of poetry, Lay of the Land (East Hall Press, Augustana College, 1983), and is the co-author of Introduction to Journalism, 1968.
He plays third base tri-weekly in senior softball leagues in Scottsdale and Fountain Hills, AZ, where he and his wife and now live. His hobbies are photography, woodworking (benches and birdhouses), and reading.
