This shows the woman, whose plain dress is enlivened with a blue belt and blue trimmings which match the ribbon in her hair, smiling in what seems to be a short sleep. The model would most likely have been the artist's wife, who died young but whose presence continued to pervade his art. Jacqueline Banerjee
