By the Light of the Lantern by Mortimer Menpes. 1901. Watercolor. Source: Japan: A Record in Colour, facing p. 128. Although this scene and the next both come in the chapter entitled "The Geisha," they show groups, including children — a small audience for some unspecified ceremony, each face illuminated by the lantern, an unseen source of light apart from the small ones they carry. Menpes loved to paint in this darker style and was particularly skilful in showing light and shade. — Jacqueline Banerjee
