The chapter on Japanese workers finds Menpes discussing his plans for his house in England while strolling along the theatre streets with his companion in Tokyo, the helpful merchant whom he christened Inchie — "a perfect little genius of a fellow" (155). However, this scene might be from elsewhere: the same chapter contains an anecdote about the time he bought up the entire contents of a toy stall on one of the theatre streets in Kyoto! — Jacqueline Banerjee
