Street Scene in London

Street Scene in London — The Jam at London Bridge. Harper's Weekly (2 April 1859): 213

The new bridge (built in 1831) in this illustration is already a choke-point for vehicular and foot traffic, with hansom cabs, a farmer's wagon piled high with hay, and omnibuses. With a mid-century population of well over 2,700,000, London clearly needed more bridges across the Thames. Image scan and text by Philip V. Allingham.
