Anton Weichselbaum (1845-1920), a Viennese pathologist-bacteriologist, was the first to isolate, in 1887, the bacterium Diplococcus intracellularis meningitides from the cerebrospinal fluid of patients diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. (The causative agent would be renamed Neisseria meningitides in 1901 by Albrecht & Ghon.) Weichselbaum's classic Grundrisse der pathologischen Histologie was published in 1892 to warm acclaim, becoming a standard text in the field. The book was translated into English and published in 1895 as Elements of Pathological Histology (London: Longmans, Green & Co).
