Campbell, a Glasgow-born poet and historian who often took up causes, settled in London in 1803, and promoted the idea of a new university there ("The plan I suggest is a great London University" — see "The University of London: The Founding Colleges"). He later became Rector of Glasgow University. He is shown here with a quill in one hand and manuscripts in the other. According to Ray McKenzie, several thousand people attended the unveiling ceremony (144).
