Introduction

According to the Mapping Sculpture site, Stephens, who was born in Devon “executed a number of important commissions” there, studied with a painter and then with Edward Hodges Baily before entering the Royal Academy schools in 1837, the year of Victoria's accession to the throne. “Between 1839-42 he worked in Rome afterwards returning to London to continue his studies at the Royal Academy Schools.”
