Endpapers by Walter Crane

Endpapers by Walter Crane. 9 x 24½. Coloured wood-blocks, engraved by Edmund Evans. This elegant interplay of reed leaves plays on the theme of pan pipes, the subject of the book of music by Theo Marzials. The rhythmic pattern suggests the movement of musical notes and seems at the same time a simplified pattern for wall-paper; though nominally in the idiom of Arts and Crafts, it prefigures Art Nouveau and is quite unlike the congested wall-paper designs of William Morris.
