Left: The whole lamp standard. Right: Close-up of the cross-piece.

The two cast-iron lamp standards at the main entrance of the former County Hospital, York, were contemporary and made by William Walker, the same firm that made the base of the Market Cross, Easingwold. Walker, whose firm also made the balustrades on the two main staircases inside, is described by the York Civic Trust as "York’s leading ironmaster." The standards carry copper lanterns and have the initials of the York United Gas Light Company at the cross-piece. [Click on these images for larger pictures.]

The standard has a splendid cast-iron triple lion's head centrepiece (left) and lion's paw base (right).
