Things one would rather have left unsaid

Things one would rather have left unsaid. George du Maurier Punch (14 January 1882): 18. Click on image to enlarge it.

Proud Mama. “Don't you think dear Baby’s the Image of his Papa?”

Dull but well-meaning Family Friend. “Well, perhaps he is – but I Dare say he'll outgrow it in time.”

du Maurier excels in drawing handsome men and beautiful women, but this cartoon shows he can depict less attractive people in the mother-in-law and husband. How pretty are the maid and mother! Note, too, the way du Maurier has signed this cartoon by placing his name in the lower right corner of the painting in the background.
