Jesus in the House of Martha. Artist: Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. Engraver: unknown. Source: Die Bibel in Bildern, Plate 196. Click on image to enlarge it.

And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. [Luke 10: 41-42; King James Bible]

Schnorr von Carolsfeld here employs the so-called plateau composition familiar in the works of Northern Renaissance artists in which the main figures appear against a wall with openings or a parapet behind and beyond which the viewer sees a distant landscape.
