The Tortoise and the Birds

The Tortoise and the Birds

Richard Heighway

Photomechanical reproduction of pen and ink drawing.

4½ x 3¼ inches

Joseph Jacobs,The Fables of Aesop, p.110.

Tortoise asking the birds to carry him to his new home; two frogs and a lizard listen on with incredulity at his trusting stupidity. As usual, Heighway’s design is part verisimilitude and part decorative pattern. Airless in effect, it maintains a child-like tone.
