Theseus and the Minotaur

Theseus and the Minotaur

Charles Kingsley

1856

Wood engraving by an unknown engraver

6¼x 4 inches

Kingsley’sThe Heroes, facing 200.

Kingsley’s pared down design efficiently depicts the scene for a juvenile audience. His use of the ‘outline style’ links the illustration to John Flaxman’s classical imagery and, despite the artist’s lack of skill, has a certain dramatic resonance.
