Passage Complemented: Dinah Demands Background Information about Stapylton
Having learned that her brother has failed to glean anything much about Stapylton's "prospects" as a potential husband for Josephine —
"We want everything; everything that you heard about this man. Who he is, what he is; what by the father's side, what by the mother's; what are his means, and where; who knows him, who are his associates. Bear in mind that to us, here, he has dropped out of the clouds." (300)
— Dinah flounces out of the room. That old Peter has been too embarrassed to ask for such specifics conveniently plays into Stapylton's hands, but certainly his reluctance to disclose such information freely is suspicious, as both Withering (centre) and Dinah agree. In her petulance, Dinah overturns "a spider-table, and a case of stuffed birds that stood on it, as she passed" (301, the final page of "Cross-Examinings," Ch. 37). The serial number's curtain closes.
