One explanation of this epithet is that it was gained by the 9th Regiment during the Peninsular War because they sold their Bibles for alcohol. An alternative explanation is that the Norfolk Regiment's badge — Britannia — was mistaken by the Spanish for an image of Our Lady so it was regarded as something to be venerated in Catholic communities.
