Moses and Samuel

Designer: Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898)

Firm: Morris & Co.

Stained glass

All Saints', Putney, London SW15

North Aisle, 4

Moses and Samuel, nearing the end of the north aisle, are both familiar Burne-Jones figures. Moses, with his Commandments, was used at St Mary the Virgin, Merton Park a few years previously. Samuel, with his horn of oil for anointing, was perhaps first used in Llandaff Cathedral in Wales, in 1869. Colours may change but the design lives on. This window commemorates Thomas Solomon, who died in 1910.
