Canal Scene, Venice

James Holland (1800-70)

Oil on panel

Labelled with title, artist's name and dated 1836

11 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches

The date of 1836 makes this one of Holland’s first essays on Venice, a subject for which he became famous. From this year almost half of his exhibited pictures were of Venice. Trained as a watercolourist, Holland’s glazes in oils were thin, layered and luminous. Few artists have caught the light in the small back alleys of the city, which he preferred to grand vistas, so well as he.
