An attractive waiting-maid hesitates with her hand on the door-handle. What can she hear? She has just come with her silver tray to clear away the table, but perhaps fragments from the conversation within are holding her back. Shadows are important here, although the lower part of the dress is so lightly sketched. Like the maid, the viewer is left wondering.
