Stained glass

The central one of the five apse windows, All Saints, Selsley, Glos.

Here at Selsley is a strong rendering of this most famous of all New Testaments scenes, very bold, very simple, very human: the suffering figure, pale against the deep colours of the background and the clothes of two figures at the foot of the cross; Mary, the distressed mother with cloth in hand for wiping blood or tears; St John, holding her hand.
