Study of a Nude Figure for Music. 1875. Pencil on grey-green paper; 225/16 X 187/8 inches (56.7 X 47.8 cm). Collection of the National Gallery of Canada, accession no. 45766. Click on image to enlarge it.

This drawing is a study for Music, which was exhibited in an unfinished state at the Dudley Gallery in 1875, no. 437. The pose in this drawing differs from the finished watercolour principally in the position of the arms, especially the right arm, which in the watercolour is raised and holding a lyre. The turn of the back and shoulder is also slightly altered, and the drapery is carried to a much greater degree of finish in the watercolour. A drawing of Painting in the private collection of Scott Thomas Buckle may have been intended as a pendant to Music.
