The last chapter in Menpes's book is entitled "Characteristics," and here the various virtues of the Japanese are recorded, from self-control and politeness, to aesthetic sensibility. He has clearly noticed their family feeling, and respect and care for the aged, as well. — Jacqueline Banerjee
