In the legend Julien is cursed after killing a whole herd of these innocent, peaceful creatures. But this cruelty, and its dreadful consequences, are expunged at last by his unfailing kindness to a leper — who turns out to be none other than Jesus. Note the rabbits in the forest grass beside the deer, and the bird in the trees above.
