Tadema drew this sensitive little sketch in January 1891 whilst the Tadema family was staying with the American artist Frank Millet and his wife Lily at their house in Broadway in the Cotswolds, following the death of Tadema's wife, Anna. Frank Millet headed a small band of American artists who had settled in the sleepy and picturesque village of Broadway in the 1880s, away from the hectic pace of London. It was a frequent bolthole for many artists and writers of the day, such as John Singer Sargent and Henry James, and the Millet house formed the social centre ol the community. Frank and Lilly had four children of whom Kate was the only girl. Frank Millet was later lost on the fateful maiden voyage of the Titanic in 1912. — Rupert Maas
