Fun 5 (4 May 1867): 82

The Honourable Member for Westminster. — “I beg to propose — the Ladies!”

John Bull, whose hat contains a document on which we see “Reform,” looks out at the viewer while Gladstone and Disraeli look anything but enthusiastic. This cartoon mocks Mill’s then-ultra-radical desire for female suffrage. He published The Subjection of Women in 1869, two years after this cartoon appeared.
