The Distance to Downing Street

1853

Wood engraving

Punch 25 (853): 55

When D-s-li (Disraeli) asks the cabby R-ss-l (Lord John Russell), he tells him, “Well, Sir you'll find it a long way.” In fact, fifteen years passed before Dizzy became PM for the first time at the age of 64.

Interestingly, unlike Tenniel, who drew Disraeli so often, this artist made no attempt to emphasize Disraeli's Jewish features.
