Charters
Cardiff has received some twenty charters in all, including a 12th century document. That of Incorporation was granted by James I., A.D. 1G16. It comprised and extended those of Edward III. (13.39) and (1359) ; Henry VI. (1455) ; and Elizabeth (1600). It became a County Borough under the Local Government Act. 1888. The Charter exalting Cardiff to the status of a City and its Mayor to that of Lord Mayor was granted by Edward VII. (1905). It is a Quarter Sessions Borough and an Assize Town. The rateable value for the year 1919 was £1,233,972.
Government
The government of Cardiff is vested in a Council consisting of 40:—10 Aldermen and 30 Councillors. The City is divided into 10 Wards, three Councillors representing each Ward. It is proposed by the extension scheme that the City shall be represented by a larger number of Members on the City Council. [64]
[Up to the year 1918, it was represented in Parliament by only a single member.]
