A Sculptor, studio potter, aircraft manufacturer, and architect, Wells was born in Brazil and studied sculpture “at the South Kensington School of Art (Royal College of Art) in the 1890s and studio pottery at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. . . . Wells is considered one of the first true studio potters working on an entirely independent basis” (Mapping Sculpture).
