Binding for The Grave

John Leighton, designer

1858

Elaborate gilt blocking on maroon cloth

8¼ x 5¾ inches

Essentially a transitional binding of the late 1850s in which Leighton moves from the interest in naturalistic motifs to the austere geometry that characterises his style in the sixties.
