Cover design for ‘Mrs Holland’s Peaches’

Probably by Harry Napper

[1896-8]

Cloth binding

6½ x 4¼ inches

This design by Napper is another example of the Silver Studio’s delightful covers for children’s books. Typically, Napper combines naturalistic motifs (the cross-legged girls, the doll and racket at the bottom margin), with Art Nouveau repetition, with the two figures in bottom zone being identical and the one in the middle having slight differences from the others. The stylized rustic form recalls the motifs in the Studio’s textiles.
