Further and further he flew

"Further and further he flew"

Honor Appleton (1879-1951)

c.1932

Illustration for Hans Christian Andersen's story, "The Fying Trunk" in Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales. London: Nelson, 1932. Facing p. 146.

Here, like both Heath Robinson's Yes, I will go with thee and other illustrations in his 1913 Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales and his Midsummer Night's Dream of the following year, Appleton captures the exhilaration of flight, as the young man's dressing-gown billows out behind him and he braces himself for landing. The story is often taken as an allegory of the story-teller's craft (for example, see Briggs 179-81).
