This is the cat that killed the rat.
Randolph Caldecott
circa. 1916
Postcard; a photo-mechanical reproduction of a coloured wood engraving by Edmund Evans
5 x 3 ¼ inches
Reproduced from The House that Jack Built. Caldecott’s cat is clearly based on careful observation, and the artist adds a number of homely details: old and floppy boots, a basket, a jar, a bottle and some apples. His vision of an idealized rustic past is carried forward in these incidentals, endowing the whole scene with immediacy and cheerful familiarity (no. C2).
