The Queen of Hearts

The Queen of Hearts

Randolph Caldecott

circa. 1916

Postcard; a photo-mechanical reproduction of a coloured wood engraving by Edmund Evans

5 x 3 ¼ inches

Reproduced from The Queen of Hearts. In this design, The Queen of Hearts is characterized as a housewife consulting her cookery books; in tiny script, Caldecott includes the titles of ‘The Art of Making Tarts’ and ‘The Complete History of Jam.’ As usual, the fantastical and prosaic intermingle, and the image is an interesting blend of Pre-Raphaelite beauty-making in the form of the Queen and Aesthetic pattern-making in the form of the repeated heart-motif. (no. C5).
