Longing for Home

Artist: Thomas Dalziel

1867

Wood-engraving, cut by the Dalziels

5 x 4 inches

Jean Ingelow’s Poems, p.197

This is another of Thomas Dalziel’s atmospheric designs, with the crepuscular light and desolate sea and landscape acting as a visual sign of the character’s state of mind as she longs for her missing loved one in ‘Seven Times Seven.’ The Dalziels’ engraving is of a high order, registering the textural differences between the sea, cliffs, and swashing waves.
