The presence of such minor American characters as Elijah Pogram and Mrs. Hominy among Eytinge's cast of thirty implies a very different interpretation compared to Phiz's of the novel as a whole. Phiz in his forty 1843-44 illustrations graphed relationships between groups of characters, focussing on such major characters as young Martin, Seth Pecksniff, and Tom Pinch.
