Harriet Beecher Stowe,Uncle Tom’s Cabin, title page

The main illustrations in this book are by George Thomas, but Macquoid enhances the designs by using emblematic borders. The floral accessories shown here partake of the mid-Victorian ‘language of flowers’; the roses connote both tragedy and Tom’s loving nature while other plants such as the ferns signal fortitude and memory.
