This is a cleverly designed image contrasting activity with inactivity, movement and repose, age and youthfulness. The Dalziels very much enhance the quality of the draughtsmanship by focusing on the effects of light; note especially the play of shadows, which are both diffuse and used to define the figures. There is no surviving drawing on which the cut was based, and the Dalziels produce what is again a brilliant demonstration of their expertise as engravers.
