This is a preparatory drawing for the wood-engraved illustration appearing in an edition of Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress (London: Cassell, Petter, & Galpin [1865]), 121. The drawing is in the Raphaelesque manner of the High Renaissance, rendering its subject in the heroic idiom.
