Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, Bart., R.A., 1834-1890, who was born in Hungary, arrived in England in the revolutionary year of 1848 and became a British citizen in 1865. Sculptor in Ordinary to Queen Victoria, he became an R. A. in 1880, two years before this caricature, and a baronet in 1889. His work includes the Wellington Memorial, Hyde Park Corner; Lord Beaconsfield and Dean Stanley in Westminster Abbey; Carlyle on the Chelsea Embankment; and the recumbent figure of Archbishop Tait, in Canterbury Cathedral. He executed the stone figures of Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales on the Temple Bar Memorial, Fleet St., 1880, for which C. B. Birch modelled the "Griffin". He also executed the portrait head of Queen Victoria for the new coinage of 1887. Scandal surrounded his death in 1890, since he is thought to have been the lover of Queen Victoria's sculptor daughter, Princess Louise, and their "affair ... ended with his dying of a burst blood vessel, alone with her in the studio" (Duguid).
