The sphere on the Moon

The sphere on the Moon

Claude Shepperson

Photomechanical reproduction of a watercolour

H.G. Wells, ‘The First Men in the Moon,’ The Strand 21 (Jan–Jun 1901): 504.

A dramatic, expressionistic image in which Bedford toils through the lunar snow as he tries to escape. The black, geometrical forms of the capsule form a reassuring contrast with the striations of the blizzard as the character, who is reduced to a blur, struggles to make his way home.
