Diary of a Goose Girl

Diary of a Goose Girl

Claude Shepperson

Photomechanical reproduction of a pen and ink drawing

Frontispiece, Wiggins, Diary of a Goose Girl.

A good example of Shepperson’s capacity for whimsy, shown here in his pictorial frontispiece for Kate Douglas Wiggins’s children’s book. The artist’s refined treatment of line, so often noted by his contemporaries, is put to good effect. Essentially a piece of Art Nouveau, the illustration also reflects the influence of Hugh Thomson’s nostalgic designs for titles in the Cranford series.
