Anthony Trollope,The Last Chronicle of Barset, Vol 2. Facing p.371.

An illustration showing the family’s escape route, with a letter from Mr Grantly offering protection. Thomas emphasises the clergyman’s priorities – affectionately putting a hand on Grace’s shoulder as he reads the letter. This is the final design at the end of volume 2: far from sentimental, it suggests there might be better times ahead, while not ignoring the emotional history that has led to this point in the narrative.
