Mahoney has selected for illustration the satirical narrative essay on the food services industry that is Chapter 3, "Main Line" The Boy at Mugby" in Mugby Junction by Charles Dickens. Writing in the role of the boy who works in the railway refreshment room, the writer's praising the imperious Matron of the establishment (left) goes against the notion that the customer (in this case, a visiting American in a white suit, right) is always right. Mahoney's illustration does not do justice to the domineering character of the matron or the "knowing" commentary of the boy.
