East Window

T. & W. Hodgson

c. 1858

St Paul's, Heslington, York

When light and cost are at a premium, or perhaps when a rich reredos is expected, this kind of patterning may be the best answer. The effect here would certainly be in harmony with the mosaic reredos and tiling by Salviati fitted later, in 1880 (according to Peter Mott). The window is perhaps a Victorian version of the well-known medieval Five Sisters' window in the north transept of York Minster, with its five lancets of grisaille glass.
