Charles Dickens' Birthplace

Charles Dickens' Birthplace

"February 7th 1812. 393 Commercial Road, Portsmouth."

Postcard

The Dickens birthplace, a postcard photo from the estate of Daphne Nesbit of Borough Green, Kent, left. Dating from the early 20th century, the sepia-coloured postcard measures 8.6 cm by 14.1 cm. It was probably purchased as a souvenir of a visit to Portsmouth because it bears no stamp. Printed by W. H. Barrell, Ltd., of Portsmouth, the card bears the caption at the bottom "393, Commercial Road, Portsmouth." The sign at the roofline reads, "CHARLES DICKENS' BIRTHPLACE / FEBRUARY 7th 1812." The lower left window has "DICKENS" and the lower right "Museum."
