Taungthaman Lake at Amarapura, a center of weaving that was once a famous separate city but which is now part of greater Mandalay. We climbed out of the bus and walked some ways across a long rickety 1.2 km teak footbridge bridge that spans the shallow lake. (U Bein was a mayor 200 years ago who salvaged the teak from a decaying palace to build the bridge.)

Left: The bridge at Taungthaman Lake raked by the orange light of near-sunset. Right: A tree that sometimes stands on dry land. [Click on images to enlarge them.]

Right: A temple, which the guide book describes as "garish and not worthy of mention."

Some of the boats that one can hire to save walking across the bridge.
